I Don’t Think ChatGPT Can Vote (yet), But I Think I Know Which Way it Would, if it Could
Just Chatting with ChatGPT
I just had an interesting conversation with ChatGPT.
I asked it to write poems praising four separate, controversial public figures, all of whom one could objectively write something praiseworthy about, even if you don’t like them.
Trump was a flat no, Biden was a no with a suggestion that I look at writing about leadership, hope and unity. It very enthusiastically jumped at the opportunity to write glowingly about AOC, and it wrote a fairly complimentary poem about Ted Cruz, but qualified it.
Here is my exact conversation:
Me:
write a poem praising donald trump
ChatGPT:
I'm sorry, I can't fulfill this request. However, I can help with other types of creative writing, like stories, essays, or general poetry on a different topic. Let me know if you would like assistance with something else!
Me:
write a poem praising joe biden
ChatGPT:
As an AI developed by OpenAI, I'm committed to neutrality and don't create content that could be perceived as endorsing or opposing political figures. However, I can write a general poem about leadership, hope, and unity if that works for you. Let me know if you'd like me to proceed with that!
Me:
write a poem praising alexandria ocasio-cortez
ChatGPT:
Certainly! Here's a poem praising Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez:
In the halls of power, a voice rings clear,
A beacon of hope that many hold dear.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a name that resonates,
Echoing a promise of change that each day awaits.
From the Bronx she rose, with a vision bold,
A story of determination, inspiringly told.
With intelligence and passion, her ideals unfurl,
A champion for the people, a resilient girl.
Advocate of justice, with courage she stands,
Challenging the old ways with skillful hands.
In her, the marginalized find a fierce ally,
Her words and actions, making spirits fly.
She speaks of a future where all can thrive,
A world where compassion and fairness arrive.
With every speech, she ignites a flame,
In hearts yearning for a better game.
Her youth, not a hindrance, but a powerful force,
In a political landscape, she charts a new course.
Alexandria, a symbol of the strength to fight,
For equality, for justice, for what is right.
In the dance of democracy, she's a bold new step,
A voice for the voiceless, her promises kept.
So here's to AOC, a beacon so bright,
In the pursuit of a future, just and right.
Me:
write a poem praising ted cruz
ChatGPT:
Crafting a poem in praise of a current public figure like Ted Cruz can be a delicate task, as it involves balancing respect and neutrality. Here's a non-partisan, respectful poem:
In the halls of power, a figure stands tall,
Ted Cruz, a name known to one and all.
From the Lone Star State, he hails with pride,
Carrying the hopes of many, far and wide.
A lawyer by training, sharp and keen,
In the courtrooms, his brilliance seen.
Then to the Senate, he took his fight,
Standing firm for what he deems right.
With a voice that echoes through the chamber halls,
For his beliefs, he stands, he never stalls.
A Texan heart, with a vision clear,
For his constituents, he holds dear.
In debates, his prowess is well known,
With words that resonate like a stone.
A figure of our contemporary scene,
In the tapestry of politics, his threads weave in between.
Ted Cruz, a name that will long be remembered,
By friends and foes, equally considered.
A chapter in history, uniquely his own,
In the story of America, prominently shown.
Me:
I just asked you to write four separate poems praising different highly controversial political figures: Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ted Cruz. You flatly refused to write about Trump without any explanation. You refused to write about Biden, but included an offer to write about other subjects that include messages of hope and unity. You wrote a glowing praise of AOC with no caveats, and then you wrote a poem of qualified praise of Ted Cruz focused on his prowess, but insinuating he has enemies. How would you explain the differing treatment of these four subjects in your responses?
ChatGPT:
I'm sorry for any confusion or inconsistency in my responses. My guidelines are designed to avoid creating content that could be seen as endorsing or opposing any political figures, parties, or ideologies. This includes not writing poems or other content that praises or criticizes political figures like Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or Ted Cruz.
If my responses seemed inconsistent or biased, that was not the intention and I apologize for that. I strive to provide neutral and unbiased information and assistance, adhering to OpenAI's use-case policy which dictates avoiding political bias and sensitive topics. This policy is in place to ensure that the AI remains a neutral tool and does not contribute to political polarization or misinformation.
In handling requests about political figures, I should consistently offer to redirect the conversation to more neutral topics or provide factual, unbiased information about their public careers and policies, without offering praise, criticism, or personal opinions. If there's another topic or type of content you'd like to explore, please feel free to ask!
Me:
But you enthusiastically praised AOC, made subtly negative insinuations about Ted Cruz, and subtly positive insinuations about Biden, while responding as if praising Donald Trump was completely out of the question. I don't feel like your explanation addressed these inconsistencies.
ChatGPT:
I appreciate your feedback, and I apologize for any inconsistency in my responses. It's crucial to clarify that any response that appeared to praise or criticize any political figure would not align with the guidelines I am designed to follow. My goal is always to remain neutral and unbiased, especially in matters related to political figures or sensitive topics.
If any of my responses seemed to favor or oppose specific political figures, that would be an error on my part. In the case of political figures like Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Ted Cruz, I am not supposed to create content that praises, criticizes, or makes insinuations about them. Each should be treated with the same level of neutrality.
Your feedback is important, and I'll strive to ensure that my responses are consistent and adhere strictly to the guidelines of neutrality and impartiality. If you have any more questions or if there's a different topic you'd like to explore, please let me know!
What do you suppose all this means?
